Chuck was diagnosed with Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma in January 2018. He was a 5-year survivor of cholangiocarcinoma and was cancer free when he passed on Sunday morning 11/27/2022. His journey included a successful resection of his liver at the site of the tumor, chemotherapies and radiation therapies. Shortly after ending those treatments the cancer returned. With the assistance of his oncologists Dr. Kalmadi and Dr. Javle, along with our wonderful mentor Toni Pham who was matched to us thru the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, Chuck was able to reach out for newer treatment therapies. Thanks to genomic testing of the DNA of his tumor and blood, he was found to be MSI-HIGH which means he had a loss of the MSH6 mismatch repair gene; this was a match for Chuck to benefit from Keytruda immunotherapy. This treatment stopped the replication of his cancer cells after a two-year treatment plan. He was off Keytruda for 9 months and restarted again when signs were showing that he was going into reoccurrence. In August 2022 he was once again able to stop treatment as the cancer was no longer visible in imaging and lab work.

So, there is hope that new and future immunotherapy treatments can and do work and they should be sought out thru genomic testing. Chuck also benefitted from Keytruda thanks in part to an extended family member Hugh Gustafson who agreed to participate in a blinded clinical trial which turned out to be Keytruda. Like Hugh, Chuck wanted his journey with his devasting cancer to help the next person who got it. Complications from Bile Duct cancer located inside the liver can cause defects all along the digestive track. These defects can easily be as life-threatening as the cancer itself. It was one of those complications that ended his life. So please be aware that this type of cancer, though defeated, can in its aftermath cause obstructions along the digestive track, portal hypertension, low platelets, bleeding varices and bleeding in general. So be vigilant and advocate for yourself or your loved ones in a timely way that something is wrong. Being proactive can make all the difference.

Chuck, was also affectionately known as Chuckie G or Charlie to some of his friends and family. He was well respected by his work colleagues. As a data analyst, he always expected that the data was “correct”. He was still working up until his death. He loved attending and holding parties with his family and lifetime friends. He enjoyed poker games, Indy races, and was a huge rock fan.  A favorite lyric from Tesla was “It’s not what you got, it’s what you give”. He referred to himself as a “tough cuss” and he was until the end. Inside though he was the sweetness of melted chocolate. He cared so much for others, and so, so many loved him back. “We’ll see …” YOU on the other side, Chuck.

A final thought from Chuck “For Those About To Rock, We Salute You” (AC/DC)
